Daniel is shown the events described in Daniel 11 and 12. Gabriel tells Daniel that he will show him these events to help him “understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days” (Daniel 10:14). Thus, if Daniel 11 and 12 are not understood within the context of Christ and His people, misinterpretation will follow. The events in this prophetic vision illustrate and show Christ’s involvement in human affairs throughout history. Despite the deep trials and tribulations of His people, He will not allow Satan’s attacks by earthly kingdoms to destroy them or their faith and extinguish the light of truth. They even had some Egyptians who were dissatisfied with Ptolemaic rule in their country supporting their cause.
The advisors to Egypt’s young king sought Rome’s aid, and Rome, rising in power, responded by sending embassies. Rome defeated Philip V in 196 BC and Antiochus III at the Battle of Magnesia in 191 BC, weakening the Syrian dynasty and slowly rising as a global power. Antiochus was succeeded by his son, Seleucus IV Philopator, in 187 BC. After Seleucus’s murder, his brother Antiochus IV Epiphanes, held hostage in Rome since Magnesia, took the throne of Greco-Syria. He decided to conquer Egypt, believing this would expand his kingdom and counter Roman advances.
To stabilize his realm, he intensified Hellenization, turning it into a tool of cultural domination, particularly targeting the Jews. Antiochus marched into Jerusalem and replaced the High Priest Onias III with his brother Jason, who supported Greek customs and helped fund Antiochus’s Egyptian campaign by using the Temple treasury.
This enraged the Jewish populace, especially when Menelaus, a non-Aaronite Tobiad, bought the high priesthood and his brother Lysimachus looted the Temple. While Antiochus invaded Egypt and was poised to claim it as part of his territory, Rome warned him to abandon his expansionist plans, which redirected his aggression towards the Jews. There was a lot of political upheaval, rebellion from the Jews, and internal conflict among the rulers. All of this led Antiochus to outlaw Judaism, desecrate the Temple by erecting a statue of Zeus, and sacrifice a pig on the temple altar.
The text says, “robbers of thy people.” In Hebrew, it says, “your violent people.” Many Jews became aggressively involved, standing up to make war to end the desecration of their religion. The Maccabean Revolt followed as a national uprising and resistance to foreign political and religious oppression. In 164 BC, Judas Maccabaeus and his Jewish followers took back their land, destroyed the altar of Zeus, and cleansed the Temple. They believed themselves to “establish the vision” of Daniel 8:14 according to Daniel 11:14, but “they shall fall” the prophecy said. They thought Daniel 8:14 was speaking of earthly Jerusalem they needed to cleanse from Antiochus’s desecration.
