This background pertains to the Old Testament sanctuary described in Exodus 25-40.

There are two foundational elements without which the sanctuary cannot function. The first is God’s law. As the law is at the heart of Satan’s challenge, accusing God that His law is unfair, so the law is at the heart of why Jesus came to die, because God’s law could not change, and Christ had to uphold it by receiving its punishment. (See Study Guide 3, pp.12-14). In the previous study, we saw that we all will be judged by Christ. Besides being able to do this legally because the Father gave it to Him (John 5:22), He should judge us because He took the punishment of the law for all our sin (2 Corinthians 5:21). In ourselves, we are sinners (Romans 3:23) and guilty of death (Romans 6:23) as we stand condemned before God’s holy law (Romans 3:19-21; Galatians 3:11-12). There can be no judgment without law. Thus, we stand condemned before God’s law, having broken every one of its commandments (James 2:10), and are separated from God by this very sin (Isaiah 59:2). But praise be to the Father for Jesus Christ! Jesus became the bridge of atonement, where the Father in Christ reconciled “the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them” (2 Corinthians 5:19). By stepping between us and the law that condemns us for breaking it, He legally took our sin so that the sin that separates us from God can be removed, allowing us to be reconciled with Him.

Therefore, the sanctuary illustrates that when you as the sinner come to God and stand at the door, you stand directly opposite the law of God on the other side of the sanctuary in the Most Holy Place. The Candlestick, which provided light in the sanctuary, represents Christ as the Light of the World. The Table of Showbread, which held twelve loaves of bread, symbolizes Christ as the Bread of Life. The Altar of Incense, where incense was burned, symbolizes Christ interceding for us with God. Daniel 8:11-12 details this attack:
(1) “He magnified himself even to the Prince of the host.” The Hebrew word for prince here, ‘sar’, is also used for high priest in Ezra 8:24. The Daily, as seen on p.11, is Christ’s atoning sacrifice and daily intercession for you. Thus, Papal Rome rejects Christ’s atoning daily ministry through the Mass, where it is claimed Christ is sacrificed again and again by a human priest interposing himself between the sinner and Christ.
(3) “The place of his sanctuary was cast down.” Papal Rome rejects the heavenly sanctuary through the confessions taken by its priests.
(4) “An host was given him against the daily.” Papal Rome established a false religious system mimicking that of the Old Testament sanctuary with priests, priestly robes, incense, altars, etc.
(5) “It cast down the truth to the ground.” Psalm 119:151 says that “all your commandments are truth.” Papal Rome changed God’s Law in their religion, as seen in Study 7. As the Little Horn in Daniel 7 tries to change God’s eternal law, this Mighty Little Horn magnifies itself in Daniel 8 and attempts to reach into heaven to cast down Christ and His salvific work, and to trample God’s law. This directly affects Christ’s followers. Firstly, a false religious system is set up, challenging and targeting the true and Biblical religion. Secondly, since God’s law is central to being part of His kingdom, this power will make war against those who uphold God’s law. God’s law is the very foundation of Christ’s kingdom. As the Antichrist seeks to subvert Christ’s kingdom and claim it as its own, it becomes clear why it focuses on destroying God’s law, because it is at the heart of Christ’s kingdom. Papal Rome continues the war against Christ and God’s law that Satan started with his original rebellion. In Daniel 7, it was seen that the judgment Daniel saw in vision is the investigative phase of the heavenly judgment, which weighs and judges all who, throughout the ages, have claimed to be part of Christ’s kingdom. This judgment also addresses the Antichrist power since it claims to be part of Christ’s kingdom and to rule in His place. Now, in Daniel 8, it is evident that in this investigative judgment, Christ must cleanse the heavenly sanctuary for three main reasons. Firstly, He must transparently deal with the sin and sinners of all those who have claimed to be part of His kingdom. Secondly, He must restore God’s law and the truth about His atoning work, which Papal Rome has obscured and trampled down. Thirdly, Papal Rome, like Satan through the ages, maligns the very character of God. In the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary, God’s character will be vindicated before the watching universe, including planet Earth, through Jesus Christ the Prince Priest.

Daniel 8:26-27
“And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.
