This phrase is used three times in Daniel. In Daniel 9:27, it refers to the kingdom of Pagan Rome, which will place their abominable idolatrous standards in the holy territory of Jerusalem with their siege, capture, and destruction of this city. Jesus further confirms this with reference to this prophecy in Matthew 24:15. The second and third times this phrase is used are in Daniel 11:31 and Daniel 12:11. In both instances, this abomination takes place under the auspices of Papal Rome.
The word “abomination” throughout Scripture is the strongest word God can use to show that something is utterly outside of His will and abominable to His holiness. It is an abomination of desolation or abomination that desecrates, specifically in the context of the daily first taken away. The word ‘sacrifice’ is not in the Hebrew; it only says ‘tamid’—the daily. The daily, in the context of the sanctuary, is Christ’s atoning sacrifice and daily intercession for you. So the daily ministry of Christ is taken away and a desecrating ministry of the Antichrist is set up. This is an abomination, for it is done in Christ’s Name and at the same time destroys His ministry.
The daily (tamid) ministry of Jesus in heaven’s sanctuary was “taken away” in the Name of Christ by instituting an earthly religious system that had to be followed; otherwise, the hand of the state would punish you. An earthly church-state kingdom was set up in the place of Christ and His heavenly ministry and kingdom. This state-church union, with its false religious system, set up to undermine Christ and His daily ministry, is the very core of idolatry. Idolatry is placing yourself, something, or someone else above Christ. This idolatry of the religiopolitical papacy that replaced Christ and His ministry is an abomination of desolation (Jeremiah 44:2-6).
Thus, the 1290-day prophecy will start when the papacy’s ecclesiastical authority, with its own earthly priesthood and mediation, is officially accepted by a people, so that it can spiritually reign over them in the place of Christ and His mediation ministry.
To understand the time period of the 1290-day prophecy, it is helpful to know that both the 1260-day and 1290-day prophetic time periods end in the same year, 1798—the time of the end. This means if you count 1290 years backward from 1798, you come to 508 AD. What happened in 508 AD?
Following the Franco-Visigothic War of 507 AD, King Clovis I (Chlodovech) established Paris (Lutetia) as his capital and embraced Catholicism through baptism on Christmas Day in 508 AD. In a bid for unification, he orchestrated the assassination of the Frankish kings Sigobert and Ragnachar, thus consolidating all the Franks under his rule. Leveraging the hierarchical structure of the Catholic Church, Clovis transformed this newly united realm into a Christian nation, united under one king and one faith, making Catholicism the official religion of the Franks. (See “Dating the baptism of Clovis: the bishop of Vienne vs the bishop of Tours” by Danuta Shanzer. Wiley Online Library).
Wylie writes, “‘On the memorable day,’ observes Gibbon, when Clovis ascended from the baptismal font, he alone in the Christian world deserved the name and prerogatives of a Catholic king.’ Rome hailed the auspicious event as a token of a long series of similar triumphs; and she rewarded the devotion of Clovis by bestowing on him the title,—which he has transmitted downward to his successors the kings of France,—of ‘Eldest Son of the Church.’” (The Papacy: A Demonstration. James Aitken Wylie. p. 40).
King Clovis I was the first barbarian king to convert to the Roman Church, uniting a whole nation under the religion of Catholicism. He united Church and State in Paris as the first of its kind in Western Europe that would serve as a model for the Papacy in the centuries to come. He also provided the Church in Rome with the military support it needed to further its agenda and interests. This all climaxed in 508 AD, igniting the setting up of the spiritual reign of Papal Rome in Western Europe, officially accepting the ecclesiastical authority of the Catholic Church.
508 + 1290 = 1798. What happened in 1798? In 1798, French General Berthier, under Napoleon’s command, marched into Rome and captured the Pope. This marked the end of the Papacy’s 1,290-year reign over people’s spiritual lives, bringing this prophetic era to a close.
The Bible also foretold the exact duration of the Papacy’s political reign. Starting from its rise to prominence around 508 AD, the Papacy gradually gained power until it achieved complete control over both spiritual and secular matters by 538 AD. According to biblical prophecy, this period of political authority would last for 1260 years, ending in 1798.
It was seen in Study Guide 7 on page 11 that the little horn power (Papal Rome) plucks out three of the 10 horns (the 10 kingdoms of divided Western Europe). Papal Rome exterminated three kingdoms: the Vandals, the Heruli, and the Ostrogoths. These kingdoms posed a significant threat to the supremacy of Catholicism and the ascent of Papal Rome’s political dominance because they all adhered to Arianism, creating a theological bond between them that made them too strong for Papal Rome to obtain political power.
The Ostrogoths were the last kingdom standing in the way of the Papacy’s political rule and therefore had to be rooted out. The final blow was struck against the Ostrogoths in 538 AD, marking the end of their reign. Belisarius, Emperor Justinian’s trusted general, pursued them relentlessly to their “last stronghold of power. Ravenna was soon entered by the troops of the empire, and with it fell the great kingdom of the Ostrogoths” (Fall of Rome, J.G. Sheppard, p. 306).
With the defeat of the Ostrogoths by Justinian in 538 AD, any remaining resistance to the dominance of the Roman Catholic Church came to an end. As a result, the church emerged victorious, its political authority unchallenged and its power unshaken, having risen from the ruins of Imperial Rome like a phoenix from the ashes.
It is critical to note that these time prophecies cannot be understood as literal days. All time prophecies in Daniel use a day for a year without exception, since they are all apocalyptic prophecies. This principle cannot be broken. Some so-called historicists want to futuristically interpret these time prophecies to be literal days somewhere in the unknown future. There is not a single indication in this chapter or book that it should be understood literally or outside the apocalyptic principles of interpretation that were established by Daniel 2’s prophecy, as seen in Study Guide 2, pages 13-14. Instead, as we have seen earlier, Christ Himself declares in Revelation 10 that time prophecies came to an end in 1844.

Daniel 12:12
“Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.”

The 1335-day prophecy here, along with the 1290-day prophecy above, answers the question of the angel earlier who asked “how long?” and that of Daniel earlier who asked “when?” in the context of the 2300-day prophecy. Daniel hears that Christ will be the Mediator of those who patiently wait in faith on Him as He sustains them through this historical time of papal dominion. From the time the papacy established its spiritual reign in 508 AD throughout the Dark and Middle Ages, Christ has been with His people and their Mediator amid the attack on this mediation ministry by the Papacy. Those who come to the end of 1335 years will receive a special blessing. 508 + 1335 = 1843. Those who are alive by 1843 will be blessed because, in 1844, the investigative judgment would start in heaven and Christ would start preparing a people of prophecy on earth. The prophecy declares that “the judgment shall sit... to destroy” the Antichrist (Daniel 7:26). Before the coming of Christ, through the judgment and His lightbearers, the Antichrist will be exposed (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4).
